Tea Recipe: Russian Chai

Russian Chai Tea: A delicious and warming variation of spiced tea that you find drunk regularly during the colder months in Russia. This tea has a more important function than just warming you up on a chilly day – it contains spices and ingredients that have nutrients and minerals that are beneficial for the immune system during a time when it definitely needs a boost! Here are some healing properties of the ingredients in this tea:

  • Cloves – antimicrobial & anti oxidant
  • Cinnamon – anti bacterial, anti viral & anti fungal
  • Tangerine peel – vitamin c and lowers cholesterol
  • Honey – anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, antioxidant
  • Lemon juice – vitamin c

This recipe makes roughly 2 litres of tea. You can keep it for a day or two if covered and stored in the fridge – heat up as desired.

What you will need for Russian Chai Tea:

  • 8 tbs of black tea leaves or 8 teabags
  • 1.5 tbs whole cloves
  • 2 tbs grated tangerine peel
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 litres of water or 8 cups
  • 1/2 cup of raw honey
  • 2 tbs of fresh lemon juice

Method:

  • Bring half of the water to boil and add the tea and spices to the boiling water (you can tie it up in a piece of cheesecloth if you are using loose leaf tea)
  • Remove the mixture from the stove and allow it to steep for at least 10-15 minutes
  • Add the other half of the water and bring it to the boil and then remove it from the stove again
  • Allow the tea to steep for another 10 minutes
  • Once the tea has steeped – add the lemon juice an honey
  • Serve warm and refrigerate for later (you can gently heat the mixture when needed)
  • Enjoy Russian Chai Tea!
